Last week, my friend and I heard Anoushka Shankar play a fusion of classical Indian and modern Western music. I know some people don't believe Anoushka deserves the attention/fame that she has received — that she is still a beginner in mastering the instrument. I can't speak to her technical virtuosity on the sitar, but the fusion was very moving. A search on Amazon.com revealed no acclaimed masters of the instrument who have attempted what she has. Is she on the cutting edge, or are there technical virtuosos of the sitar who are also doing this sort of thing?

Anoushka as you point out has the advantage of being the daughter of the master.

The artists I have named thus far were all sitarists. However there are a lot of bands doing both vocal and instrumental fusions. If you care I could name a few -
